John Santerineross is an artist who does not classify or categorize himself. He prefers to let the viewer decide and define.

He has been called everything from” the world leading Neo-symbolist artist” by PROFIFOTO, Germanys leading photography magazine to an “artistic assassin who wants to artistically assassinate Christianity, especially Catholicism” in Bill Donohue’s newest book “Secular Sabotage: How Liberals Are Destroying Religion and Culture in America” along with several other groundbreaking artists including Andres Serrano, Robert Mapplethorpe, Cindy Sherman.

Therefore John never elucidates his imagery for fear of limiting viewers’ personal interpretation. He is influenced by the early symbolists’ belief that “the creation of a mood is as important as the transmission of information, (it must also) seek to engage the entire mind and personality of the viewer by appealing to the viewer’s emotions and unconscious mind, as well as to their intellect”.

Wilson uses Timothy Leary’s 8-Circuit Model of Consciousness as a map/guide for the user and introduces exercises at the end of each chapter to break down the user’s ‘reality tunnel’. This book covers a wide range of topics related to manipulating consciousness and how the mind works, such as yoga, magick, philosophy, mind-altering drugs, sex, isolation tanks, brain washing, religion, quantum physics, etc.”

I’m planning to read this. I’m very curious how RAW’s ideas sync with Baudrillard’s. I am moving further away from the ideal of the “agent” and towards the “metaprogrammer.” There are other archetypes that appeal more than the agent who moves towards their desires and searches for optimal mobility, which is a little too complicit with late-capitalism for my taste but this is just my suspicion.

First of two news stories that could get you thinking about the future of technology and art museums.

The first, a student puts together a database of examples of art history for a computer program to visually analyse and make connections (such as above) - from Lawrence Technology University blog:

LTU student Jane Tarakhovsky showed, for the first time, that computers can match art historians in understanding and analysis of visual art.

In the experiment she let the computer analyze ~1000 paintings by 34 well-known painters, and let the computer automatically deduce the similarities between the artistic styles without using any information other than the visual content. The similarities were then visualized using a phylogeny (a tool normally used to visualize similarities between genomes of different species, but in this case was used to visualize the similarities between artistic styles). Surprisingly, the analysis of the computer was almost identical to the analysis of Art Historians.

For instance, the computer automatically placed the High Renaissance artists Raphael, Da Vinci, and Michelangelo very close to each other, and the Baroque painters Vermeer, Rubens and Rembrandt were placed by the algorithm in another cluster, indicating that the computer sensed that these painters share a common artistic style.

“So for Deleuze and Stirner a philosophy like anarchism, which posits a critique of State authority based on moral and rational principles, would reaffirm State power. Traditional anarchism sees the State as profoundly immoral and irrational, and constructs a manichean dichotomy between the State and the essentially moral, rational subject which resists this power. As I have argued, however, Deleuze and Stirner’s anti-State thinking goes beyond the categories of traditional anarchism precisely on this point. For these two thinkers the very ideas of essence, centre, and rational and moral foundations — the principles upon which the anarchist critique of authority is based — are themselves authoritarian structures which lend themselves to political domination. In other words, Stirner and Deleuze, in different ways, have gone beyond the limits of the anarchist critique of authority, turning it back upon itself. They have taken the critique of State authority into an arena in which the anarchists could not go — that of rational thought itself, thus breaking with the categories of Enlightenment humanism that bound anarchism. Unlike the anarchists, Deleuze and Stirner do not allow us the privilege of this strict opposition between the irrational, immoral, corrupt power of the State, and the rational, moral essence of the human subject. They do not allow, in other words, the uncontaminated point of departure of human subjectivity that is at the centre of the anarchist critique of authority.”

which maybe charting a kind of Lacanian McLuhanism.
Not sure yet.

So far it’s very good. Drawing out McLuhan’s theoretical predecessors, from Aquinas to Barthes, they drew upon some great connections between McLuhan and Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Freud, Jung, Symbolists, Said, and more.

A section I’m reading now is really highlighting some of McLuhan’s views on sex. The trauma of an ad-saturated environment combined with the incredible potency of technological innovation, has caused an psychic identification with the machine (in place of what was once a human-animal hybrid in the totem animal). Haraway comes to mind here. This identification creates the hygiene obsessed culture, with post facto reasoning for the need to maintain such cleanliness. There is a contrast between technology (power) and sex (comfort) that is resolved, but only in a sense. Sensitivity is weakened due to the sensory overload of consumer-tech. culture. Sex is something one produces as if on the assembly line, perhaps even specialized. The hands we use to operate the machines are made more and more uniform even when difference of consumption is encouraged. There is also an increased interchangeability of parts. Sex becomes an issue of mechanics and hygiene.

I wonder to what extent our politics of liberation have become a strive for further interchangeability of parts and sensory thrill-seeking.
